They Call Him Diablo
Part #5

Diablo carried the manilla envelope under his arm, as he and Sierra walked over to the house in which she lived. The house was located a block from Hopkin’s Law office. With each step she took, Sierra was getting more excited. She could hardly wait until that envelope was open, and she knew what information was inside. So Molly McGuire was not her real name. Now, what did that mean? Why would she conceal her real name from everyone who knew her?

Diablo walked into the kitchen, and threw the envelope onto the table. He turned to Sierra and said, “You know, I would certainly enjoy a cup of your coffee.” Sierra thought, “He wants coffee now when he could be tearing into that envelope and finding out the identity of Molly McGuire. That’s just like a man. Where was his sense of adventure? She looked at him and said, “I will have to brew a pot, so it will take a few minutes.” He sat down at the table, and seemed unusually quiet. She saw he had made no move toward the envelope. Frustration was building in Sierra, but she knew it was not her place to push him. She could see he was deep in thought. After what seemed like an eternity, he looked up at her and said, "Babe, I am almost afraid to open that envelope. There may be something there that will change my whole life. Somehow, I have a bad feeling about the contents of that envelope.”

Sierra finished the coffee, poured a cup, and set it in front of Diablo. He still had made no attempt to open the envelope. He took a drink of the coffee; and sighed as though he had a heavy weight upon his shoulders. After taking a few more sips, he reached for the envelope, and tore it open. Papers of different sizes and shapes fell out on the table, also a key, a locket, and a wedding ring. A question was forming on Sierra’s tongue, “Diablo, I thought Molly was not married; that looks like a wedding ring in the envelope.”

Diablo was focusing on the papers, reading through each one. He came to one that had been tied with a pink ribbon, and his face turned an ashen color. “Diablo, what is it?” Sierra asked. He began to moan, “It can’t be! No, it can’t be!” He handed her the paper with the pink ribbon, and she began to read. It was a birth certificate for a baby girl born forty years ago, and the name on the certificate was Maria Lopez.
