Two beams of light are searching for Heaven
Trying to find something way up there.
A fragile attempt to ease our sorrows-
Trying to be strong for those we care.
A battered bronze globe stands over
The brown grass of Battery Park.
Mournful remnants of a great tower
No longer real, but still in our hearts.
Tonight, they’ll light those searchlights
To resemble the ghost of steel
To resemble the ghost of windows
To resemble the grave downtown conceals.
Six months ago today, we cried
And stared at that clear sky in disbelief.
Six months ago today, life cried
As though robbed brutally by a thief.
Two beams of light are searching for Heaven
Trying to find something way up there.
A fragile attempt to ease our sorrows-
Trying to be strong for those we care.
Every night for one whole month,
Those lights will etch the coal black sky.
Every night for one whole month,
It will be a reminder of only “why?”
September 11, a day that needs no year
To be remembered in our aching hearts.
Rubble and dust and memories in photos
We must never forget that they were here.
