What did you do that September’s day
When those three metal angels fell?
Did you look Heavenward and recite a prayer?
Did you kick the ground and curse Hell?

Did you wait in line on a highway’s shoulder
Bumper to bumper to buy gasoline?
Were you sitting in shock and called someone
Disbelieving what images you had seen?

Did you walk outside beneath that cloudless sky
And raise your voice beyond a scream?
Did you grasp your head and hide your face
Trying to convince yourself it was a dream?

What did you do that September’s day
When the world mourned suddenly?
Did you look at the pictures and look at the lists
And wonder why it had to be?

Did you run out and buy yourself a gasmask?
Did you decide to purchase yourself a gun?
Did you go to the local firing range
And shoot at targets of Bin Laden on the run?

Did you smile at everyone around you
With a new kindness and empathy?
What did you do that September’s day
When our world changed so drastically?

Were you one of the hundreds lined up
Outside each door of the local Red Cross
Waiting to give your blood to save others…
Wanting to give back life within the loss?

Did you hesitate on that test in school
And put your pens and pencils down
Only to stare at the P.A. in daydream
Wondering if the evil lurked in your town?

Did you go out and buy yourself a flag
And display it anywhere that it would fit?
Did the day seem cold and dark to you
Though by the sun, it was blissfully lit?

Did you watch the video of the culprit
Grinning as he proclaimed his part?
Have you watched the coverage on CNN?
Are you now afraid of the dark?

Where were you when the sky came down
And crashed onto America’s roads?
Though we’re changed, we’re still standing
A great nation… now everyone knows.
