Anfang Januar 2011 kündigte das Arctic and Antarctic Research Institute in St. Petersburg an, den See anzubohren und Proben zu nehmen. Die benutzte Methode soll eine Kontamination ausschließen. Dazu wird 20–30 m über der Oberfläche der mechanische Bohrkopf durch einen thermischen ersetzt, der sich dann bis zum See durchschmilzt. Bei Erreichen der Oberfläche soll der Bohrkopf durch das unter Druck stehende Wasser wieder in das Bohrloch gedrückt werden und das Wasser im Bohrloch gefrieren. Bei einer Folgebohrung werden aus diesem gefrorenen Seewasser Proben gewonnen.[7] 29,53 m vor Erreichen des Sees musste die Bohrung vorerst abgebrochen werden, da die Temperaturen des einsetzenden antarktischen Winters ansonsten die Hydraulikflüssigkeit des Flucht-Flugzeugs gefrieren lassen würden und die Forscher daher hätten überwintern müssen.[8]
