Mit Hilfe des Very Large Telescope (VLT) der Europäischen
Südsternwarte ESO in Chile gelang es einer Forschergruppe
um Paul Crowther an der University of Sheffield, den
bislang massereichsten Stern im Universum auszumachen.
Dazu untersuchten sie die Sternbildungsregion R 136 im
Tarantelnebel, die sich in der Großen Magellanschen Wolke
(LMC) befindet, einem Begleiter unseres
Milchstraßensystems. Die Große Magellansche Wolke und
somit R 136 sind rund 165 000 Lichtjahre von uns entfernt
und stehen von Mitteleuropa aus unbeobachtbar am
Südhimmel im Sternbild Schwertfisch (Dorado).
