You don't say what your location is. If you are in South Australia, the State Library has a fair bit of information that is easy to search.

They have 3 books, births, marriages and deaths that record records from the 1800's in alphabetical order. When doing my husbands genealogy, I just photocopied the relevant pages, then at home was able to cross match families. You could even get brothers and sisters and their marriages and children.

Smith and Jones are too common, you would need a specific person to start with and then it would be easier to track family records, but you would be searching through pages and pages of information. Clayton might be the one to start with.

There are also other books giving information about some citizens from the mid 1800's. I found several ancestors with detailed information about them and where they came from.
