Hello Richard, As far as i can figure out ther has only been one grant of arms to a member of the Noakes family. This from another Noakes researcher transcribed from Burkes Armorial 1908:

“Per pale argent and gules, a fesse invected between two leopards’ faces in chief and a rose in base all counterchanged.”

In English, that translates as:
1/Divide the shield in half vertically and colour it white on the left and red on the right
2)Create a broad horizontal stripe, divide it down the centre and colour it red on the left and white on the right. Now cut 8 semi-circles (circumference outwards) along the top and bottom of the stripe, so that the red end of the stripe has four bumps at one edge and four at the other, and the white end has the same.
3) Now place the stripe half way up the shield, horizontally
4)Create two leopards’ faces and colour one red and one white. Place the red face in the white area at the top-left of the shield, and place the white leopard opposite it
5) Create a rose with five petals and five leaves and a central point of five spikes. Colour the leaves and the central point green. Divide the rest of the rose vertically, colouring the left hand side red and the right hand side white.
6) Place the rose at the bottom of the shield on the dividing line between the two colours.

The motto is “Nil Desperandum” (“Never Despairing” in Latin)

These are the personal arms of Wickham Noakes (my gggrandfather), JP, granted to him as the High Sheriff of Surrey between 1907 and 1908. He was a Brewer in Croydon. He was born in 1840, and died in 1923. Only he and his direct descendants have a legal right to bear or use these arms. Most of the Noakes population of Surrey, Sussex and Kent connect to them in some way.

If you could let me know about your direct Noakes ancestry, as far as you know it, I can probably tell you how closely you are related to Wickham Noakes. I would also be happy to exchange information with you. My e-mial is louisemwn@aol.com

Louise Noakes
