I have some information on the Australian Buttanshaws. Our family tree, prepared in 1871, indicates that Thomas Buttanshaw was a lieutenant in the Royal Navy and married Ellen Fisher. The entry says simply "In Australia". It is possible that these were the parents of Henry Reginald Buttanshaw who was a Police Magistrate and Registrar of the District Court and who died on 17th October, 1888.

It seems that Thomas was a son of John Buttanshaw who died in 1827 (aged 66) and grandson of William Buttanshaw who died in 1756 aged 47.

I suspect that Henry Reginald Buttanshaw married an Ellen Thornton in Australia. An Edward Thornton Buttanshaw, who may have been their son, got married in Dover (in England) in 1890. He was a Colonel and his son, Lieutenant Edward Henry Underwood Buttanshaw, died at 22 during WW 1.

I cannot find any trace of any surviving Buttanshaw family apart from a small infestation of us in Ireland and the UK, all descended from Cyril Buttanshaw, who moved to Dublin shortly before WW 1. His father was Edgar and grandfather was Henry who was probably a first cousin of Henry Reginald.

Any information you might have would be of great interest. Likewise, I can give you more detail if you want it, though my brother knows more about our family history. He is convinced he has heard of a female Australian windsurfer bearing the name. Any ideas?
