Oh my, Warhorse is right, it can get complicated and even thorny ... in my view it is a subject that has undergone many twists of perceptin and suffered a lot of exploitation in the past 15 years or so ... I can answer you in so far as it is a part of my own set of traditional beliefs (and I am of Western European lineage ...) For my people, a "totem" is related to a particular tribe or clan, and may be included in the story of birth or creation . My people's totem is Raven . It is a protector and guide, and a way of life . I have spirit guides because I recognise everything pertaining to Earth has a spirit, waters and flowers and rocks and beasts and Man, everything IS spirit ... everything ; there are spirits from other worlds within our physical world too . Some spirit guides can take the form of an animal but may be some of my ancestors incarnated in that animal ; some may be from another lineage and choose to guide me, and they are usually very, very old, so old they are not attached to their original lineage anymore, but have recognised some worth in me that makes them want to guide me (and because i am open to their messages) ; some may be the spirit of a particular animal ; some may be human in essence, some may be shadow ... they are quite personal and you may have several . Some will come and go . You have obviously seen something that "tweaked" your awareness in the black bird . Just listen, and open yourself . It will make sense if you do .
