They say that if you take an wild animal and study it, and watch it, that it will teach about your place in the universe. For me it was a wild scrub jay who became my friend. He eats out of my hand, he comes in my house and sings to me, and it doesn't matter if I am gone three days or three months, he recognizes me and greets me like an old friend, yet he is a free wild bird that lives on his own out side. He roosts in the hollow of an old willow tree, and flies around the neighborhood during the day industriously buying nuts in his secret hiding places for winter. He has his wife who he has mated for life, he raises his young, he defends his territory, and he lives a full life. This led me into scientific study of avian cognition, it led me to new friends, and he taught me about spiritual things, and he made me feel closer to Heaven and Earth. I have known him for six years now. I first met him as a fledgling under my deodora tree. He seemed bolder than the other scrub jays and curious about everything around him. Until then I barely noticed the scrub jays that were all about, and I thought to myself, how could I have missed such a wonderful thing all these years.
We have gotten too far away from nature. It is full of blessings beyond measure, and it is sad that our children today are so far from it. I hope that we can go back to the the Earth, it has much to teach us, and whether one believes it literally or metaphorically, She has much to teach us.
