Subject: Holidays

Well, another Columbus Day has passed! I never have cared to celebrate the day and therefore have never given much thought about how appropriate it's recognition as a holiday is! Honestly, it is just a free day off school or work! That has changed this year as a direct result of reading several post on this site.

Throughout Monday, my thoughts kept wondering back to old history lessons taught all those years ago in school. The more I thought about how history had been twisted, the more disturbed I became. Should we teach about Columbus? Yes, we should, but as an explorer who travelled farther than anyone in his world had previously...Not for having discovered a place that was already inhabited!

There was something else that bothered me as well. No matter how hard I tried, I could not think of one single holiday celebrating Native American contributions. This really bothers me since I live in Calif. and we celebrate everything...Cinco de Mayo, African American history month, Kwansaa, and St. Patricks Day! These are some of the holidays that we recognize at the state or federal level in an effort to increase appreciation and acknowledge the contributions of differant ethnic groups. Can anyone tell me...Is there a holiday on any calender, state or federal, which celebrates the many contributions of native cultures as a whole?

If there is such a holiday, I would really like to know about it and if not, than it's creation is sadly overdue!
