Subject: Carol's storm

She sits upon the porch steps listening to the rain,
Her feet wet from the raindrops falling from the overhang.
Gooseflesh embroidered on her arms, from the relentless wind,
She pulls them close to her nightgown and tries to cover them.
Glancing to the window, where a single lantern burns,
Hope living in a light, for her dear love’s safe return.
One-hundred-eighty nights, absent he has been,
Searching for himself and what lies deep within.
Vowing not to return ‘til himself he does not resent,
Indefinitely gone, ‘til his whole heart is hers again.
The lightening flashes in the distance, thunder rolls o’er the clouds,
Oh how she does miss him since he has not been around.
She stands up slowly, her back to the rain and walks in out of the cold,
She readies herself for sleep, another dreamless night alone.
Before her head meets the pillow, she walks toward the orange light,
She lets the light expire and something inside her dies.
Returning to the unmade bed in which her absent image lies,
She kneels down to pray to God, but all she does is cry.
