Hi Morgan's Mom!! Welcome to pageants!
I have a 9 year old daughter also. We have done pageants since she was a baby. What you need depends on what type of pageants you plan on doing. You should definitely start out with prelims if you don't know what you are doing yet. They are usually at malls and much less glitzy than the bigger pageants. The rules aren't as strict and it gives the girls a chance to get comfortable on stage. It might look easy, but a lot of work goes into what it takes for bigger pageants.
In addition to clothes, she would need to learn poise, stage presence, eye contact, proper footwork, how to speak in case there is an interview, etc.
A coach is very helpful when first starting out....especially with older girls. Lots of girls start out older and do very well. You just need to learn the ropes before dropping a bunch of money.
A coach will teach her how to walk right, stand right, how to have good eye contact, how to smile, etc. A coach can also guide you to find hair and make up people, designers, photographers, etc.
For prelims, the attire is not as picky as the bigger pageants, but there are still some things to keep in mind. You need to find a good color that is flattering to her. It doesn't matter what the latest style is if it looks bad on her. Pastels are always popular, as is white. Cream is a bad dress color because it looks dingy on stage. Red and black are not proper colors at all and dark colors are not usually liked by judges. Bright, fun colors are always good if they look good on your daugher.
Fit is also very important. Don't make her something big to grow into. There will be points deducted for clothes that are too big, too small, short, long, etc. They have to be a perfect fit. Also make sure there aren't elements of the outfit that look out of proportion such as too big of sleeves, a waist that is either too long or too short, too low of a neckline, etc.
