I asked the same thing when a newbie, and I will give you the same answer I was told:

Magick works. It is all about faith just like any other religion. Does prayer work?....same answer. Bottom line is that sometimes the answer isn't what we wanted or expected, but an answer none the less. Thus, similarly with magick the results are not always as we envisioned. (another reason to bind all spells to harm none) Unless you are interfering with the magickal outcome in some way (karmically for example, or in the mundane realm by going in there and provoking the guy!) then the spell will work and the spell will "hold". I can discuss my personal experiences with this particular spell with if you wish (I have used it countless times) and I am sure others here have as well and can share. But the bottom line is that you do a spell because you believe, and yet it works whether you believe it will or not! So basically if you worry about it afterwards you are wasting your energy.
