Subject: Netscape Revisited and Finished

I got another Email yelling at me because Ford doesn't work right with Netscape 4.5. This is my final answer on this issue, it's going into the FAQ. I'm posting it here in case anyone wants to comment on it.

Why don't you write your pages for Netscape?

First, notice something about that question. And yes, that's exactly how it's phrased when I'm asked. Netscape-boosters in particular are keen on the unfair tactic of blaming website designers for the shortcomings of their browsers.

My answer to the above question is, quite frankly, why should I?

Sound rude? Well, it's no less rude than someone demanding that I write my website to cater to their particular browser.

And yes, that's exactly the point here. If you're using an older browser, you're not only asking that I accept the fact that your browser is arrogant enough to ignore web standards, but you're also demanding that I ignore those same standards when writing my pages, just so that you can continue flitting about the net without a hitch. I'm sorry, but as a web designer who's put in 6 years with the web under corporate control, I'm not willing to do that.

The browser war's been over at least three years, and I see no reason to make life easier for users who continue demanding that the internet be shaped to their favorite browser. If you can't see pages correctly, the liability lies with your browser, not with the internet.

I am now working on moving all of my pages over to pure XHTML and CSS. These are web standards. They're how the web was supposed to be, before Netscape and Microsoft tried to to take it over.

Does this mean I'm going to punish users of Netscape and older versions of IE and Opera? Not at all. They're punishing themselves. There are plenty of options available out there for them. I'm doing my best to make my pages as standards-compliant as possible, which means the content of my pages will still be available to browsers that can't render the design (I've also even gone the extra few feet to make certain CSS features available to users of the newer versions of Netscape and Mozilla, despite the fact that they don't support them). But I'm not going to alter my design just so older browsers can see the pretty colors. If you want the design part as well, you'll get a browser that works.
