So I went to see "Signs" today. If you plan on seeing it, don't read the last part of this post.

Anyway, I'm also reading "King on Writing," the Stephen King autobiography/writing guide.

Both have made me examine the way I write, which is pretty much a blend of both styles.

King says you sit down and write. You start with an idea of what you want, and you write it. The characters should come to life as you write them, the story should unfold as you write it. Basically, if you want to surprise the reader, you have to suprise yourself by not knowing the outcome.

M. Knight Shyamalan, on the other hand, seems to write his last scene first, and works backwards, sprinkling bits of the ending throughout the rest of the story.

Like I said, I'm a combination of both. I know what's going to happen each chapter, and I've got a fair idea of how it'll end (although both Angels and Philtre surprised me). But I still let each chapter write itself. Some characters I've meant only as one-time bits, but they were so much fun and so interesting, I've rotated them in as regulars.

But I think I'll continue leavint the spontaneity of not plotting Ford too much.

Signs Spoilage

So I said I saw Signs today. Thought I would pass on my judgment of it.

It was crap.

It was terribly predictable if you've seen 6th Sense and Unbreakable.

Ok, you know how 6th Sense drops hints throughout but they're subtle and you're surprised at the end because you didn't catch them?

And how Unbreakable drops hints throughout but they're not really that subtle but the ending is still ok?

Continue the downward slide.

Signs is about as subtle as a PeTA protest. I guessed the ending of this movie in the first 20 minutes.

It's worth seeing, but save yourself 6 bucks and rent it.
