It's wonderful that you're proud of yourself for getting into Novice! But...
1) About the moving up: Novice is a very hard, competitive level, and everyone is eyeing that one first place to move up into Prizewinner. If you feel like you're really trying hard, and aren't getting firsts, maybe it's time to really look at yourself. Check out the basics: do you have high jump-2-3's? are your rocks nice and neat? can you hear every click and treble? are your thighs constantly touching (meaning you have crossed feet)? Also, are your steps hard enough? If you're still doing your Beginner 1 reel, then chances are you aren't going to move up.

2) About the solo dress: Every teacher has their own reasons why and when you should get a solo dress, depending on level, ect. Novice is about the time most start getting solos, but if she still won't let up, think about making the solo dress a goal. Prizewinner=Solo Dress!
