Starring Nicolas Cage, Penelope Cruz, Christian Bale, and John Hurt.
One word: WOW.
It is the story not only of a woman who is promised to one of her countrymen but falls in love with a soldier of an occupying army, it is also an account of the occupation of the Greek isle of Cephallonia during World War II.
There is so much in this movie that will appeal to so many people. Audiences will learn from Captain Corelli that, in all things in life, there are songs to be sung. Even in dark times, there is hope; even in desperation, there is salvation. Brotherhood binds people together very closely in trouble. They will learn this by watching him play his mandolin, seeing him encourage his comrades in arms through positive thought, observing him as he gazes into Pelegria's (Cruz) eyes, and as he lies beneath the body of one of his fellow soldiers.
Through Pelegria, audiences see that the heart does not always follow the rules; sometimes, it is not the likeliest person with whom we will fall in love. Faith, and faithfulness above all, is all-important.
Her father, played by John Hurt teaches us that the heart cannot be ignored, and that, when the falling in love is over, it's what is left over that counts... THAT'S what he says is real love.
The cinematography is wonderful, set on location in Cephallonia, Greece. The characterization is exemplary and is driven home by excellent acting and a beautifully written story. And, there is something in the movie for everyone - there is music, romance, wartime intrigue, and explosion. Viewers will find that they do not wish to blink during the movie, not wish to yawn lest they miss something extraordinary.
I highly, highly recommend this movie.
Oh, and... hehehe, take a tissue ;)
