Well technically he doesn't HAVE TO take off the plenum if u have a first gen D, but it makes the process much easier. I just fixed mine. The front is a piece of cake, but the back is a bitch. You can get at it by removing the intake at the throttle body and kinda squeezing in there. It's a pain in the ass but it is much quicker then removing the whole head of the engine. Even if he was to do it the long way, I don't see where he get's $500 to do it. It's probly 2-3 hours of labor at most. Parts are about $30-$40. You do the math.
