After a little more investigation I conclude that the speaker itself is gone. I hooked up another speaker to test in place of the woofer, worked without the buzzing. I stopped by Radio Shack this AM. They have a 6.5" woofer Rated for 40watts at $19.95. (Wimpy for sure but that's 10 watts more than the stock one is rated for and plenty cheap to boot) I'd have to drill new mounting holes for that one as they don't match up.
