Because this was posted a while back I'm mainly posting this for anyone else that comes along.

More than likely this person was experiencing sleep paralysis. I know this because it happens to me on a regular basis. Go to google and do a search of these types of things and you will find an amazing bit of info on the subject. Some people believe that if you are prone to sleep paralysis then you can enter into what is known as lucid dreaming. If you don't know what lucid dreaming is..it's where you are somehow able to control your dreams. I've never been able to have lucid dreams. It takes a lot of discipline. Anyway, this is something that I deal with quite a lot. It is very scary.
Also, sleep paralysis is a point between being awake and asleep. Your body is awake but your brain still thinks that you are sleeping. If you are dreaming during one of these "attacks" it actually appears as if it where happening right in front of you and that it were completely real. The reason you can't move is because the brain releases a chemical that causes you to be paralyzed to a degree during sleep. (Also, this makes it impossible to speak) It would be a BAD thing if everyone was acting out their dreams. To anyone that comes along..hope this helps.
