An afternoon pushback gave our brave stalwarts sufficient time for their hangovers to kick in on Sunday morning following a messy ¡§Surprise¡¨ 30th birthday party for Poppet. We could therefore not use our normal excuse of ¡§We¡¦re still pissed!¡¨ and maximum effort was applied to win the game by more conventional means. Energy who had beaten us before Christmas turned out to be very appropriately named as they never stopped running. They also had some very handy halves who were capable of dribbling past 6 players at a time. Fortunately for us, our defense was solidly marshaled by Sarge, who ensured that there was always a seventh tackler in position if required. The first half was a hard fought battle with both sides making breaks and getting behind the defense before being dispossessed at the last. Neither side managed a shot on goal and 0-0 at half time was probably a fair reflection of the play thus far. The half time whistle provided a much needed opportunity for our one good umpire to teach the muppet opposite him some of the basics such as feet and stick tackles as there was no way he was going to be able to learn the obstruction rules from scratch! It worked out evenly though as both defenses were able to take advantage of the slack umpiring and more than one loose stop was rescued by a well placed foot! The second half started as the first had finished with spirited attacks from both sides and equally determined defense. Going into the last quarter, Valley started to see a lot more of the ball and Kitty, Spike and Gloria were able to make great inroads into their half to set up a string of shots and half chances. Unfortunately Energy¡¦s defense stood firm and it was going to take something special to break the deadlock. That arrived with 10 minutes left on the clock when Herr Flick lined up for a free hit just on our 22m line. Spotting Poppet lurking in the opposition D, Flick hammered one of his trademark shots straight down the pitch and barely an inch off the ground. It was so hard and fast that Poppet barely had the time to bend down to meet the ball with the faintest of deflections before it thumped into the back board. Energy were stunned and their heads went down. Two minutes later another Poppet deflection, this time off a Manny free hit and an assist from Gloria, took Valley 2 up and effectively sealed the game. A late consolation goal was probably a fair reward for Energy but they never recovered from the Flick/Poppet hammer blow. Bring on the next victims, We¡¦re hungry!!
