I've been studying wild horses for quite some time now...it's my side job from college. I've noticed that mares do have a choice. They can kick the stallion and runs away if they don't want to breed and mares do get to choose. If there is competition, the mare chooses the strongest male or the handsomest, in some cases it's both.

My point is, a mare CAN choose... if there is competition.... they ARE fighting for the mare you know. The mare will watch the stallions fight and then coose which one she wishes to be with (the winner) he takes her, but it is most likely the one she wants as well.
