Dear Cjb:
Well, I know that Iona's reputation in Westchester County and the immediate area certainly improved when Tim Welsh and Jeff Ruland started considering and taking local kids. John McDonald (Mount Vernon) came back home after a couple of seasons at Loyola and others such as Greg Jenkins (Mount Vernon) and Earl Johnson (Port Chester) are beginning to follow. Ruland seems to be doing very well with Rice High in NYC and many other NYC high schools with such finds as Tariq Kirksay, Phil Grant and Dyree Wilson and many others. When you've got someone as well known as Ruland, it certainly helps. And when the players get adequate playing time and graduate, it's got to help Iona's reputation. Ruland and company have also done well in Connecticut, scooping up Nakiea Miller out of Fairfield's back yard. Nationally, it's hard to tell how Iona is viewed. But with more NCAA appearances, Iona's visibility will certainly grow and that should mean more and better players.
