Suikoden is like the...uh...how do I put this? The way 1984 is to books, or Monty Python and the Holy Grail is to movies:

You might hear about it alot but theres a good chance you've never read/watched it. See?

Its like an alternative to Final Fantasy, its a series with an ongoing plot, the first and second ones were like most SNES games (no fancy 3D graphics), tons of characters to choose from (lots of customization) and you get your own castle.

You'd have to play it to see it. I played Suikoden straight through, as I did with Suikoden 2 (but Suikoden 3, the first 3D Suikoden and the one that made it quite a bit more popular for a while, I have stopped at at the end).

I suggest downloading Suikoden and Suikoden 2, as you most likely will not find them anywhere anymore, and its starting to seem that Suikoden 3 is becoming like that.

Hell, I downloaded them both and I have 2 Suikoden disks and 1 Suikoden 2 disk.
