If there's one style I'll recommend, it'll be punk rock. It's worth checking out some of these bands (particularly good cds I'll put in parentheses):

Old-school:
-Ramones
-The Clash
-Sex Pistols (Never mind the bollocks)

Punk:
-Rancid (And out come the wolves...)
-Bad Religion
-NOFX (Be sure and check out their 20-min. single, The Decline)
-Pennywise

Irish Punk:
-Dropkick Murphys (Sing Loud, Sing Proud)
-Flogging Molly
-The Real McKenzies

Ska-Punk:
-Operation Ivy
-The Mighty, Mighty Bosstones (A Jacknife to a Swan)
-Less Than Jake
-Millencolin (Life on a Plate, Home from Home)

Commercial Punk:
-Greenday
-Offspring (anything that came BEFORE Americana...otherwise, it's not punk!)
-Sum 41 (Does this look infected?)
-Blink 182 (anything that came BEFORE Enema of the State...otherwise, it's not punk!)

Emo/Melodic Punk (for the truly sentimental):
-No Use For A Name (More Betterness!)
-A New Found Glory

If I had to pick three bands out of the whole bunch, varying in style, they'd be:

-Rancid
-Dropkick Murphys
-The Mighty, Mighty Bosstones

I've listed some classic albums next to each band name, but with those three, you can't go wrong. If you with to further expand, be sure and check out:

-NOFX
-Bad Religion
-No Use For A Name

Enjoy! (Note that punk songs are usually very short, within the range of 1-3 minutes, so make sure a cd's got plenty of songs, or stock up a few in order to make the 4 hour commute)

And whatever you do, STAY AWAY from Avril Lavigne >_<

Hope this helps!
