Subject: Will we ever see a challenge to FF7?

*WARNING* A few SPOLIERS ahead. Mostly about FFX.

I was thinking the other day, I forget what inspired this momentous event, but the topic was of interest.

Will any future Final Fantasies ever come close to Final Fantasy VII? I mean, to me it seems that when Square made 7, they broke the mold and made it completely unrepairable. Final Fantasy VIII, while being a great game on it's own, was a real let down for me, it took the really interesting nitty-gritty romantic parts from VII and made the whole love thing incredibly obvious from first glance. IX, X, both the same. As soon as Garnet and Yuna walked on screen we went, "Ahhh, love interest." Yet, I remember seeing Tifa for the first time and thinking, "Dude, she's amazing! I hope Cloud and her get together!" Then Aeris came along and I wasn't sure any more if Tifa was gonna get him, though it was made pretty obvious that she felt really deeply for him. I guess my point in this case is that FFVII has been the last game I've ever played in the FF line that didn't immediately scream out "WHOOP, WHOOP! LOVE INTEREST! WHOOP, WHOOP!"

Missing characters, then, hmmm? Y'know the first time I played VII I finished it without eben knowing Vincent Valentine existed, and I only knew about Yuffie because I accidentally ran into her and whooped her butt. Then it took me a few moments to realise she could actually join my team. Wow! How many FF games have done that? Seriously, VII has been the first game where you don't just run into your characters along the way, sometimes there are vital characters that actually miss out on the adventure. Playing X, at certain points I sorts of knew that it was about time I ran into my next character/s. It really took the fun out of finding them.

There's much more about VII than I realised upon first playing it. It was original, fun, unexpected and beautiful. The plot was so incredibly well thought out and it flowed along incredibly, never too fast, never frustratingly slow, and there were always little unexplained bits that brought up great in-depth conversations between myself and friends. The rest of the plots all seem too... Disney-ish. Polished and shined with all aspects explained and accounted for. And thought it left you with the knowledge... who wants knowledge when you can figure out stuff for yourself? I'm really kinda happy that you never saw what happened to the characters of VII after the lifestream episode, because it's always fun to imagine what happened. Did they all die? Was Aeris ressurected? Did Cloud hitch with Tifa? Did Vincent go back to his coffin? Questions! So many ideas sptinging around! What happened in X? He died, Sin was defeated, everyone lived happily ever after. Great... but boring.

At times I just feel like there never will be another game even on the same playing field as FFVII. With Characters so well created you feel an incredibly sense of empathy for them, a plot so smooth it flowed like chocolate milk, and of course, the most pulse-pounding bad guy to ever grace a screen of any sort. What other bad guy struck instant heart-skips into the player just from having the tip of his Masamune skirt the screen for a second? Sephiroth was the uber-bad guy. And as far as I'm concerened, Cloud was the ultimate "Hero".

So what I'm asking is this:

Do you guys honestly think Final Fantasy VII can be equalled or bested? Because honestly, I don't.

;)
