Well long story short (too late), I still don't know exactly what the problem with the cable modem was. The tech support guys were completely useless. I eventually just followed my gut instinct and released the IP address, reinstalled the network drivers, unplugged and replugged in the cable modem and rebooted the computer. Strangely, it worked. Miracles will never cease I guess.

Okay, I did some digging on the Diablo II expansion thing. The expansion characters and the regular characters are incompatible for gameplay purposes. However, this does not mean that our joint games are out in the cold. In order for a regular character to become an expansion character (after installing the expansion pack), the character must go through a "converter" option. From what I understand, this basically means that the game will give you a choice as to whether you want to keep your character in the old style or make them able to play in the expansion pack. If you choose the expansion pack, you can no longer play that character with people who only have Diablo II.

I guess that means that I'll be leaving Faucetta the Amazon as old style (until my three comrades-in-arms all have the expansion pack), and converting Sir Hart the Barbarian.
