Due to my current finacial situation, I've been unable to pick up a copy of the AD&D third edition, unfortunately. I've heard that they've made some improvements though. There's no two ways about it .... being broke really sucks.
I'm kind of stuck on d20's right now, myself. For a while, I was using a d100 system (using 2 d10's or d20's ..... those hundred-sided dice are a bitch, even if they are cool-looking), but I finally decided that is was more trouble than it's worth. The system I made and have settled on (for the time being)m uses a simple 1d20 roll to resolve all actions, and an Attribute # + Skill # +/- situational mods = target number system. It works great. The way I've done it is fairly realistic and speedy. And a lot easier to keep track of than a system with 1-100 ratings.
Actually, I'm kind of fond of the Shadowrun and White Wolf systems too, except rolling all those damn dice get's irrating after a while. I'm currently trying to come up with a way to elminate that cursed combat pool from SR .... that thing has been driving me nuts for the longest time now.
A Z-Files RPG sounds like a great idea. I'd be interested in any ideas you had on it.
