MYSTERY STORY: The Dog

Deep in the underground of Dr.X's summerhouse, there was a strange laboratory with many unknown research projects. Nobody knew what was going on in that place because Dr.X never told anyone about his projects unless they were finished successfully.

His last paper was published in many famous scientific journals. It was about the dog's DNA structure. He studied very hard to find a way to make a dog with an ideal brain, and he was successful. The evidence is Daang, his extremely clever dog. Every time he introduced Daang to the public, he would receive a lot of business letters offering him a lot of money if he sold Daang to them.

In the lab, there were only three living things, two men and one dog, those were Dr.X, Daang and Somsak. Somsak was Dr.X's research assistant. His duty was to look after Daang. Daang and Somsak got along with each other. Dr.X felt happy every time he saw Daang and Somsak playing together.

"Ring Ring Ring!" The phone rang at a midnight. It rang twenty times. Dr.X felt very angry. Generally when the phone rang, Daang would run and take the phone to Somsak, and Somsak would answer because he also worked as Dr.X's secretary. Dr.X woke up and walked toward the phone. "Good midnight! This is Dr.X. I'm sorry for the delay."

"Ha ha ha! That's all right. I understand... O.K! My name is Jack." Dr.X was startled. And then he heard a bark from the phone. "Do you remember that sound? Somsak and Daang are in the safe place. If you need them, just give me ten million dollars." Jack said and suddenly disconnected the phone. Dr.X was very serious because he was continuing his research on Daang, and Somsak helped him a lot so he knew a lot of important information about Daang. Without them, Dr.X could not finish his work.

Dr.X quickly called Bob, a wise detective. He told Bob the story and asked him for help. Bob said Dr.X should come to meet him at his office.

At Bob's office, it didn't look like an office. There were three bright rainbow sofas around the room and no table at all. The room was decorated by many colorful light bulbs. On the floor, there was a big painting of Bob's second wife's father. Bob painted it three years ago and put it on the floor after a big quarrel in his family. Bob liked to turn on the Air Conditioner to a very low temperature, one or two degree Celsius. He said that he really loved his office. Most of his excellent ideas came from discussions in this room.

Bob introduced Sam to Dr.X. Sam was Bob's detective student. Sam was very wise and diligent. He could help Bob a lot of work, washing the car, cleaning the room, and laundry. Every time he cleaned the room, if he found a rubbish, he could tell exactly that who disposed it and when it was disposed. So Bob asked Sam to be his assistant. This was the first job that Sam would help Bob with which was not housekeeping.

During a serious discussion, Dr.X's cell phone rang. As everyone thought, it was a call from Jack. Jack said that what he needed was not big amount of money. He just needed to be on the first page of every newspaper in Thailand. Anyway, he still needed a million dollars for an escape. He knew that Sam was there. He told Dr.X to give that money and the cell phone to Sam. He would tell where and how Sam should send the money to him. Furthermore, Dr.X and Bob must not leave the room nor use any communication equipment, thus no one would know where Sam would go.

As Sam was very smart, he had known where the kidnapper was since the beginning. Sam safely kept the money and went directly to Jack.

"Bang!" A bullet was shot. It went directly into Jack's chest. And he was killed.

Sam rescued Daang and Somsak, and brought them to the other place that he called "the safety room". The room was quite dark but comfortable. Sam locked the door and told them not to make loud noise because it might be dangerous. "I'll take you back to Dr.X in a few minutes. Please wait for me here." Sam said to them.

Five minutes later, Daang ran around the room and barked all the time. Somsak realized that Daang must smelled something weird. He tried to figure it out, and then he smelled a kind of killing gas. Somsak and Daang tried to escape but the door was locked. They tried to destroy the door but it was not successful. Few minutes later, they became very sleepy. They knew that if they couldn't escape, they would died, but they couldn't do anything.

"Ha Ha Ha!" Sam was laughing outside the room. "In fact, everything that happened was just my plan. You both have to die, and this money has to be mine!"

"Bang!" Shot by Bob, Sam suddenly died.

Bob took the key from Sam's hand and opened the door. Daang and Somsak clambered out of the room. Bob gave them first aid and said "I didn't think that I had to kill my student, but I had to."

Somsak and Daang felt better. Bob told them that he had a clue when Jack specified that it must be Sam who took the money for him. After he thought for a while, he decided to quietly follow Sam to the room.

Bob, Somsak and Daang walked together along the way from the safety room to the street. Suddenly, Bob felt something wrong with his head. Somsak had just hit him with a stone. "Why did you do that?" That was the last question Bob said before he died.

Somsak spoke, "That was just my game. I just needed to do the research with this dog by myself."
The next victim that he wanted to kill was Dr.X. Without Dr.X, Somsak would be the only leader of this project, and if it was successful, he would become a very famous scientist. Before he could do that, he must first keep Daang in a safe place, and make a plan.

Somsak took Daang to an abandoned hut near a forest. Along the way, it was dark, humid, and scary. Daang understood what Somsak was going to do but he didn't try to resist at all. Dr.X always had experiments with his brain that hurt him. He would be happy if Dr.X was killed.

Somsak went back to the underground lab. Dr.X stared at him and said "Welcome back. But where is Daang?" Instead of a reply, Dr.X received a killing bullet from Somsak. Dr.X's body was buried by the special crematorium that came from his research project ten years ago.

Daang was sitting in the hut. He noticed that Somsak was coming to take him back to the lab. Daang realized that Dr.X had been killed. He didn't want himself to be research material anymore; thus he killed Somsak, and ran away into the forest.
