I had my little girl *BrEw* spaded a few months ago, it was the most horrifying squence of events. Bruce went to the vet, But Bruce was not bruce but Brew (my bad) She was also on heat. The vet said that because all her insides were swolen because of being on heat she had to be cut open 4 times bigger than normal. She pulled a stich or two, she hated the elisabethan collar and last resort was to bandage her up. That worked with some help from some ichy tasting stuff the vet gave me to paint her with. Since her opshe has been such a loving little sweet heart and no longer do i get ignored or growled at when she is on heat. Good luck, hope you find a good vet.
