Subject: Did not know bunny was having babies

I bought my daughter a female bunny October 2002. My other daughter wanted a bunny as well and under the circumstance that we get another female I thought it would be okay. We bought this bunny at a farm show in the summer of 2003. Well, we went out last night and there were 2 babies out in the cage, unfortunately they were not alive. It was not a pretty sight. We have come to the conclusion on which one is the male and female, however why did they eat the babies? We are going to get seperate pens for them, but we are all kind of disturbed that this happened and were just looking for an answer as to why they would do this to the babies. Thank you.
