Hi Alison,
I believe the Myxomatosis vaccine is illegal in Australia
yet there are outbreaks of Myxomatosis here
because we have a wild European population which acts
as a "reservoir species" for the Myxomatosis virus (similar to the
conditions faced by pet rabbit owners in the UK and the
rest of Europe). Some people here keep their rabbits inside and others keep them outside in flywired enclosures.
Some people let their bunnies run free in the back yard and many pet rabbits here die of Myxomatosis and there is
nothing the vets can do to save the pet bunny even if
the owner pays hundreds of dollars for treatment. We
have many strains of Myxomatosis here and I believe they have been deliberately introduced. This includes the
deadly Californian strain of Myxomatosis.
Yes the Government is CRUEL AND HEARTLESS for not allowing
the vaccine.
Kind regards,
Marguerite
