Subject: rabbit facts

I have been asked by my 11 year old why a rabbit is often called a bunny. Where did that name come from? I know it's not either a male or female rabbit, I know it's not a baby rabbit, and I can't find any link with "bunny" and any foreign translation for rabbit. Can you give any clues?
