Hi Marguerite,

Some Americans don't like to use medications unless absolutely necessary, however, I have one bunny presently on heart medication (atrial fibrillation), two bunnies on Oxybenzadol (treatment for e-cunniculli parasite), and one bunny on Amikacin (pseudomonas).

I have found that lops tend to have ear problems (from staph and strep and yeast infections) that must be treated with the proper medication.

And when rescuing, I have taken in extremely ill animals that have to be medicated or face losing them.
I have used Banamine as pain med, but not any more than I absolutely have to. I believe the standard is to not give it more than 3 days in a row.

We use Probias to keep the bunny from having tummy trouble when they are on medication as well as simethicone (infant human formula) for gas and digestive problems.

We keep subq fluids in the house for emergencies, as well as Pedialyte (infant formula) if a rabbit becomes dehydrated. (It is recommended that an Amikacin injection be given in the pocket created by subq fluids...takes the sting out of the medication and protects the kidneys.)

We also keep canned pumpkin and an assortment of Gerber baby food on hand for bunnies who are having problems eating or need the extra fiber.

I keep a hefty supply of syringes and medication on hand. Baytril is an all around antibiotic used to treat infections and Pasturella. Dicural is a once a day antibiotic that can be used. Septra and Cipro are both used for severe infections...although we have noticed Cipro can cause a rabbit to lose it's appetite.

The bunny diets at our home consist of fresh veggies twice a day, unlimited timothy hay (sometimes broam if we can find it fresh), Kaytee Exact pellets (for the elder buns or buns with digestive problems or can't tolerate high calcium levels), and Manna Pro for the younger buns (this has a higher sodium content than the Exact.
