Hi,
It could have been Rabbit Hemorrhagic Disease
(which does not always show symptoms according to
authorities). It could have been a spider bite,
or a heart attack or anything really. Without an autopsy,
you will never know.
In Winter, keep rabbits out of cold and draughts.
(Keep the hutch in a sheltered area out of the cold and rain)
Newspaper alone is not very warm. Some hay for bedding would be better placed on top of the newspaper.
Also, cover the hutch at night to keep out the cold air
(but use some material that breaths eg cotton or
canvas). I just spoke to a lady whose rabbit spent
a week at the vet with pneumonia after being left out
in the cold weather here (he had a "kennel" with straw).
Rabbits do feel the cold and should not get wet.
Rabbits do not perspire so should not be made too hot
ie dont keep them in rooms heated too hot (eg above 27C
approx). In Summer rabbits may die of heat stroke if left out side trapped in a hutch. Metal hutches are not ideal
for rabbits. The metal gets cold in Winter and hot in
Summer. Wood is better (untreated pine and plywood).
Keeping bunny indoors is better still.
Kind regards,
Margueurite
