Subject: very sick rabbit

I have been doctoring a fuzzy lop for about 6mo. He is probably about 4 years old. He started loosing weight and had the snuffles, also he always sits where he messes so that his backside is always messy. I think he may be deformed and urinates on himself. I took him to the vet several times and he has been on sulfamet and baytril for a long time. For several months now I put newspaper on the bottom of the wire floor and change it twice a day thinking it would eliminate the dirty bottom. With long hair this can be a problem. It is very hard to keep clean and very touchy to try to cut the hair in that area. He gets well for a while and then gets the snuffles and one eye closes and gets all gunkey. The vet said he could have pastuerella or some other disease. This week he took a turn for the worse and in a couple of days got very emaciated and today he will not eat. He has a messy back side again and I think he is going to die. I have tried everything and feel so bad. If this is pasturella what is the best disenfectant to use on the hutch. I have another rabbit that had head tilt and has just gotten much better. I am worried that a disease was introduced by one of these as I got them at an animal auction. Could it be the same disease? I doubt my rabbit will be alive by tomorrow and if he is what shall I do about the messy butt? It definitley needs cleaned off, but do I set him in warm water till it softens enough to get him cleaned or as he is so thin and not eating will this make matters worse? I hate to torment him anymore? Should I force feed him? Any suggestions would be appreciated. Has anyone else had a similar experience? Donna dkca@mindspring.com
