TB Vaccine
Last night's dream was opening the memory bank.

In the late 1940's, my family was living in Springfield, Massachusetts. I
remembered seeing Nina Stevens' tuberculosis vaccine pox-mark once when we
were at the beach. My father used to drive a stock car for Mr. Henry
Stevens who had a daughter that was about my age. Well anyway the scene was
where I was standing in back of and between my mother to left and Nina on my
right. On Nina's left arm were two pox marks. I asked my mother, "Why does
Nina have two scars?"

Nina answered that one was the small pox vaccine and the second was a TB
vaccine. I remembered looking at my left arm to see only one pox mark,
which was from the small pox vaccine. Later mother explained that only the
wealthy that could afford to travel abroad received the tuberculosis
vaccine.

I remember the 1940's; even through I was a child. What I remembered the
most about the small pox and the tuberculosis vaccines was that no one
questioned the fact that both kinds of bacteria had families. I had a
difficult time understanding why Henry Stevens was my young friend's father
and Nina was not her mother. I thought that everyone had a mother and
father. The word "Stepmother" was not used!
