Actress sorry for wearing 'wartime Japan flag' dress

BEIJING - Chinese actress Vicki Zhao Wei has issued a statement to apologise for her 'thoughtlessness' in wearing a dress printed with a large wartime Japanese flag while on a fashion shoot in New York.

In the statement, Zhao put the boo-boo down to her 'naivete' and 'insensitivity', especially in regard to history.

She added that it was an unintentional error and hopes her supporters and above all, survivors of the Japanese invasion, could forgive her.

Zhao shot to fame in Chinese-speaking territories with her role in the television series My Fair Princess. Many Chinese have been offended by the sight of the homegrown idol garbed in a loathed Japanese symbol.

'I must tell all and one that I am a patriot... and I realise I have to strengthen my knowledge and improve my personality,' Zhao said in the statement released through Sina.com, a popular Chinese website.

Ms Zou Xue, the project manager of the Chinese fashion magazine which published the shot in September, has also quit to take responsibility for the incident.

Zhao's spokesman said that because of her filming schedule, the actress is unable to fly back to Beijing from Xinjiang to hold a press conference for her apology.

Zhao was said to have modelled free-of-charge for the Heatherette NYC dress.

Following boycotts of her news and advertisements, especially in Jiangsu Province where Nanjing - the city which lost hundreds of thousands of lives to Japanese soldiers in 1937 - is located, Zhao was forced to acknowledge her mistake.

Her house in Wuhu city of Anhui province was also reported to have been smashed by angry protesters with bricks and bottles.
