Subject: Where on earth is Bamby?

Hi all, My ancestor Norman McLean (who arrived in Australia circa 1854, and was born in 1830) has a confusing amount of birthplaces listed in various documents - and I'd really like to know where one of them is to see if it makes any sense of the rest.

His birthplace is given variously as Fort William, Harris District, Bamby, and Banby. They mostly agree at least that it was in Invernesshire!

He apparently only spoke Gaelic, so would at least have had a thick accent by the time a number of these were given to official in relation to births nd deaths...

Does anyone know where Bamby, or Banby, (spelling may be very different???) actually is?

Am I wrong in thinking that Fort William is unlikely to also be referred to as 'Harris District'? I'd thought it was further north-west, around Skye....?
