Vicki Zhao Wei has matured from a boisterous child and distant actress to a passionate professional who does what is necessary to promote her films. Brian Cheong examines her journey thus far.

Also a rookie when it comes to being an action star, Vicki Zhao Wei plays the precocious younger sister to Shu Qi's character in [So Close].

Watching her execute gravity-defying leaps and menacing sword fights, one could tell that the star of the phenomenally popular TV series [My Fair Princess] took her action scenes very seriously.

"Sometimes I focused so much on the action that I forgot about the acting!" she said at the [So Close] media interview in Kuala Lumpur early last week. "That was the biggest challenge for me, to execute a stunt and remain in character. It was a good learning experience."

She personally thinks that the movie is a good watch. "Rate my movie? I think I'll leave that up to the audience. The best rating is the box-office receipts!"

Care to comment on rumours of friction on the set? "No such thing! We're like buddies, how could we not get along?"

Born in Anhui province in 1976, Zhao was still schooling in the prestigious Beijing Film Academy when she was offered the lead role of Little Swallow in [My Fair Princess].

The series became a big hit and immediately put Zhao's name on the international map. As she got more famous, she even recorded three pop albums.

Her steady rise to fame was threatened last year when she was photographed wearing a dress with the Japanese war flag design causing a huge uproar among her countrymen.

But she made a strong return earlier this year in the movie [Chinese Odyssey 2002]. With [So Close] already in cinemas and another potential blockbuster [Warriors of Heaven and Earth] coming out later this year, Zhao is ruling the big screen.

"I was shooting the whole of last year, so this year I'm doing endless promotions," she said in jest.

The Marie France Bodyline spokesperson is also feeling happier these days thanks to a new and improved figure that she proudly showed off wearing tank top and shorts in [So Close].

"You probably don't know it, but I used to be quite fat. When I went to Hong Kong, people thought that I was 'pao so' (conservative when it comes to dressing) because I was always covered up. But that wasn't the case.

With people paying so much attention to her career, what is her take on fame?

"It's a constant learning process. I was not used to it in the beginning because of the loss of privacy.

"I was used to the quiet life, attending classes and chilling out with my friends.

"I didn't want to accept the fact at first because I thought my responsibility was just to act. Wny should I be bothered with all the other stuff? But I began to deal with it when I realised that it's more than just acting. I've to deal with the media and to promote my movies or TV shows. It's still uncomfortable sometimes but I've accepted it as my job."

Has it always been her dream to be an actress?

"My dream was actually to finish university. But I've a great interest in acting."

She claimed that she doesn't read news about her. "I don't know much about what people write about me. I usually find out about a certain piece of news when the reporters tell me!"

A boisterous and hyperactive child, Zhao has always been a handful to her parents. She is not jumping up and down as much as before but she has kept the principle of living life to the fullest.

"I gained a lot more than I lost since entering the entertainment industry. Life is a lot more complicated but it is also a lot more interesting. I'm like a lot of young people today; I don't want a life that is bland as water. Even when I encounter an unhappy situation, I treat it as a life experience, and who knows, it may even benefit me in the future."

What a great attitude for a Little Swallow.
