Why is there a hole in the left-hand corner of The Old Farmer's Almanac?

The hole in the upper left-hand corner was originally placed there in 1792 so that the little book could be hung in outhouses for a little light reading. It costs $43,187 to punch a hole in the 4.4 million printed copies of The Old Farmer's Almanac. The 1/4-inch holes drilled into 4.4 million copies weigh 8,800 pounds or 4.4 tons. The holes produce approximately 1 billion pieces of confetti each year.
