Kuchi: Who SHE (?????) Is.

Kuchi came to Zoo Atlanta a decade ago and since her arrival, has been through it all. The 13-year-old has gone through introductions -- some of them very stressful -- to all of the zoo's silverbacks. She gave birth (to bachelor-group member Stadi) when she was 6.5 years old -- the youngest recorded birth for a captive gorilla. She's raised her baby, watched him leave home, and tried to adapt to the ever-shifting social climate of silverback Willie B.'s group, to which she now belongs. Through it all, Kuchi's behavior has remained consistent: Although she's a strong, agile, adaptable gorilla who can fend for herself, separation from the group stirs up the sort of anxiety that can be debilitating. That might spur another gorilla to be unusually congenial with group members, lest they turn their broad backs. But Kuchi has tempted fate by being pushy, aggressive and, at times, even downright annoying.
