A band of bandits are raiding a town. Four men that are on a hill near the town are presented with the option of staying to fight, unsure if they will survive the conflict, or they may flee, and be assured of their survival.

The first man is a knight, he has trained for many years, he is very experienced and wise to the ways of battle.

The second man is a squire, he too will become a knight one day, and he contains much raw skill, but he lacks the experience needed for the conflict.

The third is a priest, he has no experience whatsoever with battle, and is very accustomed to the luxuries of a chapel, not the dirt of a battlefield.

The fourth is an elderly man, who is too weak to lift the sword, but is known for his generosity and bravery in his youth.

The knight, thinking that such a small town is under his line of duty, treads off with his mount.

The squire, believes that it is his duty to save the town, but he believes that how one such as he could possibly ever save the town, and then later thinks that sooner or later, help shall arrive. He too, walks away.

The priest, prays to his god, in hopes that his deity will smite such a fiendish attack on a helpless town. After man minutes of waiting, he believes that he has done all he can do, and leaves.

The fourth, and the last, the elderly man desperately wishes that he could help, but his bones frail, his body aged, cannot gain anything but his own slaughter. The fourth, only watches in sorrow and guilt that he can do nothing to save the town.

The knight, most capable of the four, could have gone down their and bested most of the raiders, but has believed that he is too elevated for such duties.

The squire, though not as capable as the knight, might have also taken down a few, and increased the towns likelihood of survival. Yet, for fear of his own life, and he believes someone else will come to save the town.

The priest, though prays diligently to his deity, masks the shame of his selfishness, fear, and inability by believing that he has done all that he could.

The fourth and final, the elderly man, has the courage to face his fears and brush them aside, but he lacks the abilities to aid the town, though had he what he needed, would have most likely of all gone down to save the town.

The moral of the knight is that, nothing should ever below someone’s duty to do, and that he that is presented with a challenge, should meet it.

The moral of the squire is that one should never believe that someone else will meet the challenge, because should everyone believe that, then the world is at an end.

The moral of the priest is that one should look past his fear, his inabilities, and take up his courage to meet the challenge.

The moral of the old man.... well, none can blame him for his courage and determination, nor doubt his abilities, because regardless of them, after a moment of sorrow, he charges toward the town blindly with only a bow and one arrow, in hopes that he can buy some time for the villagers to flee. In the end, his courage and his determination, allowed him the one shot, that drove the arrow through the leader’s skull, and causing the others to flee in belief that cavalry has come to save the village. The town celebrated their fortune, and the old man was made a memorial after he passed away, as a reminder that one must do what he thinks is necessary, look past the obstacles, find faith in his abilities to meet.... the challenge.
