The IRA are the Irish Republican Army. They were extremely active in the Republican movement in Ireland, however they are now primarily polital. The Ulster Freedom Fighters are a loyalist (or protestant) militant group. Basically, the UFF and other groups such as the UVF (Ulster Volunteer Force) are groups which fight against the movement for Northern Ireland to return to the replublic of Ireland. However, the catholics are not all innocent. There are groups such as the Real IRA which are still minorilly active. Most of the fights which go on within Belfast now a days however are usually just a bunch of biggoted boys thinnking they are cool!!

I know it is a bit vague, but it basically answers your question! I'm actually from belfast and had no idea about what was going on really until I moved back here two years ago. It isnt a scary place on the whole if you are smart about what you do and who you hang about with.

Not everyone, however, is a member or associated with a militant group, nor is everyone associated with a militant group an evil person. My best friend is protestant (Im Catholic - judging by your name, u are 2) and I spend heaps of time at her home with her family in Rathcoole, which is a big Protestant estate. My group of friends are mixed of everything and we dont care. Unfortunally, that doesnt mean that everyone is like us.

If you want more details, email me and I'll try to help you out.

Cate

PS. Where is your family orignally from??
