引用自：聲動財經網「我們這批同學，素質都很高！」張錦輝回憶，他們是第三屆必須通過考試才能取得資格的預官，同袍盡是來自台大電機、台大經濟系的高材生，很多人在當兵時，就一邊準備出國留學；而行伍中，卻夾雜著一個五專生，也就是畢業於中國海專（現改名為台北海洋技術學院）的郭台銘。同袍們回憶，當年的郭台銘，算是「十分老實的」，一放假就是去找女朋友（即日後的夫人林淑如），也不常參加聯誼、舞會，在軍中不會強出頭，也沒有如今的霸氣和強勢。更令人跌破眼鏡的是，有別於如今郭董「快、狠、準」的形象，當年的他常因為「動作慢」而成為最常被班長、排長整的對象。「我看他現在會操人，是因為以前被操得很慘，」一個同袍打趣的說。「不過，他很『認』，」楊嘯如此形容當年的郭台銘，一般人被刁難，私下總是會抱怨班長、排長，但是郭台銘雖然常常被處罰，卻都沒有怨言的去做，做完後就靜靜的坐下來休息。「他EQ（情緒智商）滿高的，被處罰得很慘，還是會自我解嘲，讓大家一起笑一笑。」曹定一說，當同袍上前安慰被處罰的郭台銘時，他也會笑稱自己是「反正不怕折磨的胖子」。這種實在而且能吃苦的個性，奠定鴻海從土城小工廠變成大帝國的基礎。
