Subject: Tribute ToThe Man

It's been well past ten years since Mark Calaway entered the business of professional wrestling. It's been about sixteen. In thise sixteen years, he has made a impact just as big as Vince McMahon, if not bigger. Deidrui is right, there really is no way to put how we feel about this man into words. There is no one word, phrase, or otherwise we can use to describe the impact he's had on us. But every Legend has a beginning. So let us start from there.
It began at Survivor Series, right? We all saw the same thing: a man, wearing a trenchcoat, coming out of a hearse. We wanted to know where he got his persona from. Well, didn't we already know this man? The same man who went hunting for souls, and gained followers along the way? Were we not already informed of a similar person? Yes, we were. We were, or most of us were, familiar with the man that was created my Stephen King's ingenius mind; The Gunslinger. We knew the history of Roland Deschain. We knew his past, and his lifelong goal. So we had a bit of backround on The Undertaker then, did we not?
We all wondered who this man was and what was going on. Well, this man made quite an entrance, and he's made a bigger entrance into our lives. We've watched this man take beatings and give them back. We've watched him suffer, look (sadly and with vengeance) into the face of defeat a few times, and we've been there with him every step of the way. We've felt his pain, suffering, his happiness. Mark Calaway has made quite a gimmick for himself in the WWF/E, and he's made himself quite a name around the world. Very few people don't know him, whether it's onscreen or offscreen, while his career was pointed at basketball or pro-wrestling. He's given this business his all, and we've given him our all. The fact of the matter is, that even though he would come out different each time, as the Lord of Darkness, as the American Bad Ass, or just as The Undertaker, he's always been the same man in our hearts. We've cheered him on every night, and we wanted to see him more and more as the years rolled on. He was a part of us, like our family and friends were a part of us, like our hearts were a part of us. We needed him. This man fueled our souls. Both the young and the old were ecstatic when he appeared, ghastly-looking but handsome at the same time.
There have been many people asking why Mark Calaway means so much to us, why we care so much and cheer until we're hoarse, why more people are watching Monday Night RAW, and buying more tickets to see all the main events. Because of the impact he's made on us. He's the one part of us that we're all missing in or hearts, deep down. For some of us, he stands for the injustic we've had to suffer, and are able, now, to raise our heads high and forget about it. For some, it's the missing figure in our lives. For others, it's like the one thing we're so afraid of, the Freddy Krueger, the Michael Myers, or even the Beetlejuice we want to see even though we're afraid of the nightmares afterwards.
This man has given his job all he has. He's given the gimmick of The Deadman more life than anyone ever could. He's put his heart and passion into playing both the face and the heel we've come to love and wanted to watch, just to escape the madness of everyday life.
That day that Owen Hart passed away, I have no doubt that Mark Calaway wanted to refuse to be in the ring. It had pained us so, to see such a great man pass away, but it probably pained Mark even more not to be able to mourn properly because he had a job to do. I don't think any of us could have experienced any of the hurt that the Calaways experienced from Owen's death. These two families were very close.
This man has probaby been the backbone of half of the industry's greatness since he appeared. He formed great alliances, made horrible fueds, and some of the best matches we still see today. Casket matches, Buried Alive matches, Hell In A Cell, and even Inferno matches. We've seen this man buried, stuck in a casket and (not long ago) burned alive in the cakset, but still he lives to this day, escaping all these said horrors and beating down every opposition to come in his way. Who could forget that fued he had with Mick Foley, when he was still Mankind? Or that time during Badd Blood, when he fought Shawn Michaels in a Hell In A Cell, then got backstabbed by his own manager, to get beat by his own 'half-brother'? Which by that moment, sparked off one of the best fueds we've come to know, and still talk about today: Kane v. The Undertaker. Two beasts of destruction, that when paired together, were undefeatable.
Ten years is a long time to keep a gimmick such as his up, but once again, Mark Calaway has pulled it off and impressed us. He's shown us both the side of him that doesn't take any crap from people, and the side that we all love, the side of a man that cares deeply for what he stands for, and what he loves. And he's made us love him even more when he pronounced all of us his Creatures of the Night.
There HAVE been rumors that Mark will retire, but I, and many of my own friends, have reason to believe to he will not leave, at least not until he's good and ready to hang up his trenchcoat and settle down for a peaceful life with his wife and children.
Mark Calaway has instilled a place for himself in his Creatures' hearts, and there is no possible way that ha can make us let it go. I myself, have watched this man wrestle from about 1996, when I was four, and he's captured my heart in a way no other man, legend, or Phenom ever will. Right now, it's been a full ten years, and I still get excited to see this man onscreen, to hear a single mention of his name, or his voice. He's made himself a legacy that cannot be destroyed, and when he does decide to retire, we will still be watching the shows, hoping for a glimpse of The Man From The Darkside. We will always hope for one more chance to see him. I myself am hoping to get a chance to see him before he retires. My chance to go to Wrestlemania 23 has been taken away, but I will do whatever I have in my willpower to get a single look at this man. For he has not just gained my heart and soul. He has gained my respect, just for being himself, and putting life and passion into the one part of all of us that we truely did not discover until he came along.
Thank you Mark Calaway.
