The ocean, normally of a mild temperature, turns icy cold when violent storms brew up, which is quite often and quite sudden. Several small boats are docked around Benshing Island, perfect for one or two riders to take out and fish. The Weyr only has one large craft, and that protected by a natural bay on the northern side of the Island; it's not taken out much. However, when accompanied by flits and/or one's dragon, a rider can fish in considerable safety, and due to the plentiful sealife, haul in a big catch if he or she is lucky.

The green dragon was walking down the beach, looking for a good spot. Bublith's rider, Katryna, was beside her. The green rider was humming a merry tune she had known since she was little. Finally, the dragon stopped and waded into the water. Kat' smiled and dropped her towel in a shady spot before running after her impressed. Bublith was wallowing in the water by the time the woman reached her. Her hide was a nice shade of green, so she was in a good mood. So was Kat. She swam up to the green's flank and leaned against the cool hide. Bublith hummed quietly.

Kyrii scanned the beach before sitting down. The waves lapped at her ankles as she gazed out to look at the ocean. Her sea blue eyes watched every ripple as the waves crashed down far away. She blinked spotted a branch, or a twig, next to her. She grinned and started drawing in the wet sand.

A few minutes later, she scootched back and looked at her sand-drawing. It was a picture of a dragon in the air, supposedly brown, shooting fire at silver threads. She frowned. She couldn't believe that she had missed Shrineth's clutch. She had waited so long, and then gone off! She hadn't even known the hatching had started, and when she finally had gotten word, it was too late! She shook her head. Oh, well. She just had to make sure she was present for the next hatching.

Rikkith crooned, turning a bit lighter in hide. ~ This is very good. I shall not have the silly nightmare anymore, then. ~ He stopped for a second. ~ And you know I shall only enter your flights, right? ~

R�ko frowned at Valor, aware that she was choked up but not quite sure why. Did she not love him anymore, and he made her upset? But, when he heard Elith�s voice�oh, how he�d hoped he�d hear the green�s voice again, after all that had happened!�he was instantly calmed.

Thank you, Elith.

R�ko gently let go of his love, but a moment later had his arm slipped around her waist. He gently supported her as he lifted her upward, refusing to let go of the one woman he�d ever loved.

�It�s ok, Val... I can take you to the Lower Caverns, how�s that sound? We haven�t missed the feast yet, and maybe we can get you something to drink and calm down...�

It took him a moment to realize that he hadn�t even thought about the Feast. And, with horror, he realized his nephew and two nieces were supposed to have come to the Weyr soon. Maybe they�d found Val or something? Lamia Griffin and Phoenix, weren�t they?

Rikkith grumbled. ~ Loveth informs me that the three are safe with hers, and that it is no longer Griffin, but G�ffin of blue Mezeth. ~

R�ko, probably seemingly for no reason, gave a sudden yell of joy, and pulled Valor close to him, spinning her around.

�Yippee!� He screamed childishly, laughing. �The three kids are here! Have been here, with you, Val! You probably knew that, of course, but MY NEPHEW IMPRESSED! MY NEPHEW IMPRESSED A BLUE!�

Kajin stood on the sandy beach and looked over to the Dolphin Hall. She smiled as her feet touched the water, and she slowly began to walk deeper. As soon as her feet stopped touched the bottom, she swam to where the raft was, and jumped on. She approached the bell, gripped the string, and pulled.

Chiewae didn't mean to be the ocean.

But of course, normal people don't mean to be floating about in the ocean. That's just common sense. Chi, however, was unfortunate enough to have fallen out of his transport boat and was now clinging to a piece of broken wood that was barely holding up his weight. Why was he like this? I shall explain.

It had all started when his small family community had decided that the North continent was far better than the South, which they had lived on for generations. For some reason, his father had decided that it was time to leave behind their herdbeasts and runners, and move to the more civilized continent. He had said they would have a better life there, and life would be more interesting. Chi had argued that life was quite fine here, and that there was no need to move away, however his point of view seemed to be disregarded. His mother had always wanted to go to the north, where she could work in a crafthall. And so, despite all protests, they had packed their belongings, rented a boat, and set off. Now Chiewae had never been too fond of boats. He had never liked the way the waves caused them to rock almost to the point of tipping over. To now be forced to spend days upon days on the ocean in one was absolute torture. Ugh. It made him feel very, very sick. Consequently, he'd spent half of the trip with upper body over the side of the boat, slightly green in the face. What had his auntie called it? Being sea sick? That was it. Whatever it had been, it had made the trip extremely no enjoyable. The only thing he had to ease his discomfort was his loyal runner, Solo, who had refused to be left behind. Minutes had seemed like hours, everyone movement causing the boat to rock and Chiewae's stomach to squirm uncomfortably. Three days they had been out at see. Three days. But his bad luck did not end there.

On one particular occasion when he was emptying the contents of his stomach over the edge of the boat, there had been a commotion over on the port side of the ship. He had only scarcely hauled himself up from over the edge, when aunts ran by, knocking him off balance and into the ocean below. Now Chi was a boy of the south. He was used to dealing with herdbeasts, befriending runners, and other such activities. He was not used to being flung into the ocean. This of course meant he couldn't swim, at least not well. Sure, he had flounced around in the water as a child, but never swam to a depth where he little feet couldn't touch the bottom. Considering his height, that had never been very far. The fact that Solo had joined him in the water in an attempt to "save" him had only made matters worse. The runner could only swim for so long, before he too was a flailing body in the ocean. Chi had been lucky enough to grab onto a floating piece of wood left behind by a ship that had passed by days ago. Had he not, he probably would have been at the bottom of the ocean.

Sigh. A stranded boy and a stranded runnerbeast. Help, anybody?

The lithe swimmer called Siren pulled a heavy pack after her, fighting to hold back the tears that threatened the swamp her eyes. Even one month after the fire, she had not yet come to terms with herself. The terrible fire that had destroyed her Hall had been her fault, and all the deaths that had occured from it had been, too.

"A simple accident, Siren. You know that, Liepchen. You had nothing to do with it," her mother had urged her to think.
"No, mother! It was all my fault, it was MY hand that turned on the flamethrower, MY hand that sprayed it over the Hall, not realising what I was doing! Mother, I was all my fault."

Each morning I get I die a little, can barely stand on my feet.

Snippets of a conversation that haunted her. The last conversation she had with her mother before she left.
Snippets of her deepest guilt, of her most private shame. Her murders, the fire she had started in a foul mood.
Her golden-brown hair slapped almost angrily against her back as she took a steep dive into the water, grateful for her mask, oxygen tank, and earplugs.

Take a look in the mirror and cry ,"Lord what're you doing to me?

A sleek grey shape darted past her, as it had many times n the past. But somehow, Kibke's familiar 'why are you so sad?' gesture didn't make her feel better.
She signed, {Let's go to the surface} to Kibke, and pointed herself upwards. She slowly paddled up, and began drifting in that direction. Her heavy pack didn't weigh her down, not now. Kibke swam under her, and began pushing her up to the surface.

I gotta get out of this prison cell, one day I'm gonna be free, Lord, can anybody find me somebody to love?

When Siren and Kibke surfaced, Kibke blew a bout of warm, steamy air from her lungs, and took in a large breath.
Siren removed her mask, and turned her oxygen tank off as she took in her first breath of fresh air in just under an hour. Siren removed her tallow-covered earplugs, and turned towards Kibke.
"Where's the Hall, Kibke?" she asked, her light voice slightly worried and slightly anxious.
"Behind you, thilly! Squee!" the female dolphin exclaimed gleefully, spitting water into Siren's face.
Siren looked behind her, and sure enough, the strange floating Hall was just behind her. She dashed the water that Kibke had spit on her face out of her eyes, and moved her legs to avoid a masty looking poacktail that swam past. Kibke grabbed it, and swallowed it whole.

I work hard, every day, I try and I try and I try!

She swung the heavy pack that carried all she owned in this world onto the deck of the 'floating Hall', and hoisted herself up with her arms. She sat on the deck a second before twisting up and rising to her feet.
"I'm going to look for Master Odette. Don't get lost, you hear me?" she demanded of Kibke.
"Right then, Thiren!" she squee'd, leaped up in the air, and jumping back on her tail-fin.

To be the bad man...

Sad, lonely blue-gray eyes swept across the ocean. A young man walked slowly upward, towards the lapping waves of the ocean. He was far enough away not to be seen by the wandering eye, he hoped.

A black cloak covereing every inch of him, he knelt by the waves, letting them tickle his knees with their soft sea foam. He looked to the sky. There might be a storm soon...

He sighed agian, and shifted his position. Maybe one day he'd have a friend. But he really didn't need one. Everyone he'd ever known had shunned him. Why would these pathetic weyrbrats be any different?

Still... he wished he could forget his lonliness, if only for a second...

What are we living for?

Taelle watched wistfully the dolphins, swimming along with ease through the waves, with their untamed beauty... their unintentional majesty. He loved all animals, Taelle. And not really people. They didn't like him. He had the appearance, nature, and all about air of a ravenous canine, known as a wolf. That's where he got the nickname Lone Wolf.

He watched one of the journeywoman's dolphins swim in the seas, unwavering in the perfect rhythem that was swimming to the sea creature.

Sitting in the sand of the shores, Taelle held the sturdy, barck-like paper he'd make himself, along with the self-manufactured colors. He lightly used the blues, the grays, and all sors of colors, hoping to capture the true art of the moment. No onlookers should bother him; he had an air that made everyone feel uneasy. He could work in peace. Although, sometimes too much peace wasn't a good thing...

Today, N'ris has taken a larger ship than usual out, since he has a companion to help him out. Not that young K'vren is helping all that much; the young man is running around on the deck and peering over the railing with his green eyes wide with delight, though he does his best to do what he's told when N'ris calls curt instructions to him. Roventh is showing off a bit as he plows through the water, earth-toned brown hide darkened by the sea, while weyrling Notusith is finding a new kind of joy in swimming. His navy blue hide is actually too dark to blend into the water near the surface, with the sun shining so brightly, but Roventh indulges the young dragon's attempts to sneak up on him.

(I LIKE swimming,} Notusith informs his rider happily, skimming along underwater. {I can't fly with you yet, but I can swim around the boat and it's almost exactly like flying!} He's taking to the water like a dolphin.

{/N'ris said I might be seasick, but I'm not. And this is fun!/} K'vren declares happily, unaware that most people wouldn't find fishing on this scale "fun". It's more the enjoyment of novelty than relaxation, because safe net-fishing is hard work; drag-fishing would be easier, but N'ris refuses to do that because it not only kills common inedible sea creatures, but can badly injure an unwary dolphin. He's had too much help from the dolphins to bear the thought of risking them. But since this is new, and therefore fun, K'vren is having the time of his life adjusting and watching the nets.

Leaping down from the wheelhouse, N'ris looses the anchor and then joins K'vren in hauling up the full nets. "Pull!" he orders, and they heave and tug until the nets, filled with wriggling, flopping fish, land on the deck. "Now sort them. Food fish in the hold, everything else toss back out. If you don't know, ask." He begins sorting fish with the skill of a long-time fisherman, letting K'vren's excited babble flow over him without making much noise beyond the occassional hum of agreement.

Roventh surfaces with a spray of water, splashing the boat. {So, rider-mine, is the child too intolerable?} he asks a bit slyly. It had been his idea to bring K'vren along, under the guise of keeping the boy out of trouble. N'ris, in the brown's considered opinion, simply does not spend enough time with other human beings. All those years alone in a fishing boat after the disaster, that's his problem. He doesn't know how to be social.

{/He's tolerable. I may bring him back, if he stays so enthusiastic,/} N'ris replies, startled and pleased by how hard the boy is trying. He'd expected to spend more time keeping the weyrling in line than actually fishing, but K'vren seems to actually enjoy helping. Once the fish are sorted, he nods to the net. "We patch it. Rope," he explains, pulling a coil of net-rope closer. "Tie it, then cut it, so you don't waste." He pulls the bucket next to him, full of the best fish, a bit closer as six firelizards circle around it with interested expressions. "Not for you," he growls at them, and his brown and blue chirp in resigned acceptance of the familiar scolding and soar off to hold court on the wheelhouse roof.

"Leave them alone," K'vren orders, and the other four hold a spirited chorus of unhappy cheeps before following Stern and Starboard. Then the young man peers curiously at N'ris' bucket. "What's that? Something special for the Hatching Feast?" he asks, deeply interested.

"For the dolphins, if they come," N'ris explains. He glances automatically out to sea, in case any are close. "Most FisherCrafters kept fish for the dolphins, and it's a habit." He's already explained to K'vren, in what for taciturn N'ris is exhaustive detail, about his childhood as the son of a MasterFisher.

"Dolphins?" K'vren's eyes light up. "I've heard about them, but I've never seen them!" the young man exclaims. "Do they really TALK?"

"Yes," N'ris replies, and with that one word unwittingly lets himself in for a barrage of eager questions. Feeling a bit overwhelmed, he continues to tell K'vren about dolphins while keeping an eye on the sea for the same animals.

To be the bad man...

Daraco was sitting by himself at the edge of the beach, completely absorbed in thought. He absent-mindedly stroked the neck of his sleeping Eagle, the sun glinting beautifully off the bronze hide as the boy thought.

Green Grenith had laid about eight eggs. All had hatched and impressed, and the worst that happened was a blue with a permanently closed eye. A marvel indeed, if Daraco ever knew one.

One thought bothered him in the back of his mind; why didn�t he go? If not to impress, he could�ve just watched. But, no... he had stayed in his little cove by the Ocean, the very cove he sat outside right then. And now he wouldn�t even go to the feast, where they would surely have the best food he�d eaten in a long time. Frankly, sometimes Daraco didn�t understand himself.

To be the sad man...

Daraco sighed, and looked around. The closest people he could see were the Dolphineers, over at the Dolphin Hall. He smiled inside. They would pay him no heed, and give him no trouble.

A black cloak was swept around the young man, covering every inch of the Lord Holder�s son, from the cloth around his pale form and black attire to the hood covering the unblemished face. All that could be seen of the eighteen-turn-old within was a pair of icy, distrustful blue eyes behind a shadowy hood.

Only one person had seen Daraco without his hood and cloak. Retired queen-rider Rinali of Lilith had talked with him, and had seen him face-to-face before he�d pulled his hood back up, and hid his identity of Daraco, son of an infamous and cruel Lord Holder. It wasn�t who he anted to be, so why should he even try?

He just sat there, looking out into the Ocean, and wondering what he could do now. Once the feast was over, he could help the drudges clean up, but until then, he could do nothing.

R�ko wandered out over to the Ocean, and heaved a sigh. He was feeling a bit better� and he really should face his fears of families. After all, Valor�s brother was not his brother. And besides, he did have one brother he liked. Good old Senon�

~ Senon? ~ His dragon asked, clearly interested. The brown�s eyes shined as he clawed his way through the sand towards his rider.

Yes, Love. R�ko gave a sigh. Senon was my only little brother. He was only five turns old when I last saw him, but� he�ll be twenty-seven turns if I ever see him again.

~ So, you left them twenty-two turns ago?! ~ The brown asked in disbelief.

R�ko sighed. Rikkith, did I ever tell you I was a triplet?

~ I believe not, rider-mine. ~

Well, it�s true. It was Rekon, Renon, and I. Rekon was ok, but Renon was the best friend I could ever have�

The dragon hesitated. ~ Well� what happened? ~

R�ko�s eyes filled with tears. He died. He took a long, shuddering breath. When we were nine, he died.

~ Oh. ~

After than, I couldn�t stand it, Rik. I had two older brothers and a triplet that were always against me, parents like mine made it worse� all I had going for me was Senon. He was like a little angel-boy. The only blonde, all pale-skinned and bright-eyed�

~ You say his name is Senon? ~

Yeah. R�ko was startled by the question. Why?

Rikkith didn�t need to answer.

S�non was walking along the Ocean of his new home, just thinking. Behind him, a smallish green dragon, more silver with green highlights in actuality, moved swiftly, gracefully. Loveth cocked her head slightly. S�non was deep in thought. That was new.

< What�s up, Sen? > Loveth asked, nudging him gently in the back. He looked around at her.

Just thinkin�. He answered, sighing.

< �Bout what? > She asked.

Me old family.

< Ahh� >

I�ve told you about them, haven�t I?

< Naturally. Tell me� didn�t you say your brother, the one that ran away, his name was-- >

Reko. S�non said immediately. Why?

Loveth didn�t need to answer her rider, either.

R�ko and S�non met coming from different directions across the shore. Rikkith had known a green pair called S�non and Loveth had transferred, and Loveth had head the name �R�ko� used, so naturally they knew perfectly well who the other rider was.

The two brothers looked at each other for what seemed like ages, until both uttered one word at the same time.

�Senon?�

�Reko?�

Tears filling both eyes, the brothers could both recall in split seconds the last time they saw each other. Reko was just about to leave, when Senon found him on the stairs. They only stayed long enough for a quick �goodbye� and �good luck�, and then Reko had left. It had seemed like they were out of each other�s lives forever. Until now.

Blinking away tears, S�non broke into a run, and soon collided with his older brother. He was still a head shorter than R�ko was, and the younger brother threw his arms around the older brother, and laid his head on his chest. R�ko, surprised, smiled down at the younger man, and put his arms around him. No words passed through, but silently both brothers were screaming out their pleasure on having the one meaningful family member back in their life. They just stood there, arms around each other, in a brotherly embrace.

For a minute, nothing was said as the brothers were united. Then, still holding R�ko as though afraid he was a mirage, S�non spoke. �Reko? I... I thought you... were dead.�

�I�m R�ko now.� R�ko answered, smoothing his brother�s hair back. �As you are S�non, I guess. And, I was beginning to think the same about you.�

�Nope.� S�non said, smiling through his tears. �I�m alive. I was strong, like you knew I could be. And then I got Loveth. Of course, you can imagine how mad Father was...�

�Shh...� R�ko said, smiling at his younger brother. S�non was always very fragile and childlike, and now it was hard to tell he�d aged at all from his five turns to his now twenty-seven. �Don�t worry. Father will never get to you again.�

�I know. We�re safe from him here. He can�t come any closer.�

�That�s right.�

They just stood there, enjoying each other�s presence, remembering the only things that had made their lives more enjoyable.

Loveth walked over, and sat down next to Rikkith, giving their riders a smile draconic smile.
< Isn�t it wonderful? >

Rikkith answered with a smile. ~ Yes. ~ Rikkith sighed. ~ He�s finally happy again. I can�t believe it, Loveth. ~

That was her entire Hall. Matt had gone to Impress, and from what Savvy had sent pictures of, he got himself a brown. Good for the boy. And Synthis, the girl who'd captured his fancy, had gotten a green. Good for her.

Savvy skimmed the sea, getting totally drenched, and trying to fly again. Odette closed her Record, and set her quill pen down in the inkwell she had been holding. She rescued the tiny green, and swam breaststroke back to the Hall.
"I wish you wouldn't try to drown yourself, Sav. You're my only dry land companion."
She dried the small green off, and rubbed some herbal oil into the tiny body.
"Here, eat some Fingerfish. You'll feel better."
She offered the green a whole fingerfish, which the dazed green accepted, chewing almost thoughtfully.

Odette then picked up her Records, and her writing equipment to put away. She Set the inkwell in it's hole, and clsed the blue glass securely. She laid he pen in her writing desk drawer, and slid the Record into its proper place.

"Where is everybody?" shee mused to herself. Not wanting to discuss it with herself, she simply rang to Dolphin Bell in the three beat cadence that meant Report!
Theresa, affectionately known as Tera, swam up beside the MasterDolphineer, and began to talk.
"Odette. There have been Tiger sharks seen near the Hall. They've got Aphrodit and Lokiyu!"
Odette strapped her crossbow to her lower leg, and bound her conch horn to her upper arm. She rang out the sequence for Urgent! Urgent!, and then used several short blasts to do the same thing on her horn.

((This is the perrfect oputunity for Kendra to come back. Also for Iris and Arden to get involved.)

The young man finally found is way through the weyr to the ocean. Finally!! This was where you could go to become a dolphineer......I hope. He stands on the sand, watching the waves gently coming in. He looked around. There was no one there! [Whenever you want someone to be around you, the place is always deserted,] he thought, grinding his teeth togather. He sighed, and walked down to a little place near the water. He looked out over and saw...A bell!! Knowing about the dolphin's answer to a bell, he swam over to the raft and hauled himself up. He rang the bell so it said something among the lines of "New person wants to become a dolphineer!" He rang it another time, then sat down and waited for something or someone to come into view.

R'ko had sped up into a run at some point. he was running from the barracks, from where his weyrmate, Valor, and her brother, V'gor, were. He didn't know exactly why. Well, then again... yes he did.

A massive shadow blocked the sun as brown Rikkith flew above his rider, concern running through his many-faceted eyes. What on Pern could've upset his calm, friendly rider to this point? What was the meaning of it?

R'ko colapsed on the sand in a large cove, one that he'd hidden in ever since he found this miserable place. It was just large enough for the brown to sqeeze into semi-comfortably.

~R'ko?~ the brown asked, scared by thefact that his rider was crying. Not much, and not badly, but he was crying.
Rikk?
~Yes, rider-mine. It is me.~
Why... why did you follow...?
~Because, rider-mine, I'm worried about you. We all are. You bolted without a moment's notice when introduced to your weyrmate's brother. That doesn't sound like the R'ko I know.~
There's some things even a man's dragon doesn't know. Things locked away.
~I want to know. I want to help you, love.~
Well, guess what? You can't. My past is dead.
~It sounds very much alive to me, rider-mine.~

At this point, R'ko couldn't stand it. Leaning against the brown talon, he pounded the ground angrily with a fist, tears shining in his eyes.

Not a word was said as a mutual understanding took place. SLowly, eerily, the brown started to understand, bit by bit, what his rider was scared of. However, he'd never have enough time to get it all sorted out before they had to leave. If only someone could get him to say it... but who, if not his own dragon?

Synthis quickly looks up at Odette before giving the Master time to reply. She knew it. She had to go.

[I've got to go, Odette. I'm going to live my dream.]

Without another wor--or, sign, the mute girl ran as fast as she could out of the cove she'd been hiding in with Odette to tal--sign. Her whole body trembled from the sudden movement after her little tear-filled chat, and she fell three times as she ran. The first two times, she was by herself, but the third, she saw one of her only friends at the Weyr.

Matt.

He was talking with a brownrider. Afraid he'd see her, though not sure why, she got up as fast as she could, and ran, long and fast. If he shouted to her or anything, she paid no heed. FOr all she knew, he never saw her.

Her worried flits made sure this wasn't possible.

Serpens, finally getting used to his wings, dove up fast and landed on the boy's shoulder, chirping exstacically. Traci and Torch flew up, and flew around MAtt, chirping as wildly as the little bronze. However, it was Nazereth that made sense of the whole ordeal.

Quickly, the gold called the bronzes and brown to order, and gave Matt a clear image of Synthis and the Hatching Ground with a green and some eggs.

The whole flit thing, altogether, lasted about a minute. Synthis was already exiting the ocean by then, running, adrenalin filling her as she left the Oceans for the Hatching Sands. She wanted... to impress.

Walking along the edge of the water, Iris gets excited all over again. Waves lap at her ankles like contented, fed cats and the sand scrunches wonderfully on her bare feet. But there was no one out here! She looked far down the beach and her poor eyesight could make out a dragonblob, but that was about it. No one was around to ask about starting as a Dolphineer. Darn it!

The waves looked so inviting. She would just take a little dip, it wasn't forbidden, and the sea looked gentle right now. Shucking off her jacket, Iris wades out hip deep and then springs the rest of the way into the water, splashing and enjoying its coarse welcome feel on her skin. This was here. This was right. Hopefully someone would come. Diving, she twirls and kicks underwater, having a great, grand old time.

A large brown dragon, the sunlight striking a rich, deep glow on his earth-toned hide, circles above a boat far from the bay. Armed with his own fisherfolk raising and the watchful eyes of his dragon and firelizards, the boat's skipper and sole inhabitant isn't worried about storms. He'll know well before anything hits that it's coming, and if a rapid squall does blow up, his dragon can haul the boat back, or at worst bring him home safely.

N'ris doesn't really approve of net-fishing, considering it wasteful. Plenty of inedible sealife gets caught up in drag-nets, to die with the food-fish, and it bothers him. Net-fishing could destroy the bounty of New Isle's waters far more quickly than anything else, as he's repeatedly pointed out to the other members of the Weyr. Still, when a catch is needed quickly, drag-nets will grab it better than anything else, so while three hooked and baited long-lines trail from the boat's sides, the brownrider is quietly mending a net. His two firelizards, brown Stern and blue Starboard, perch on top of the mast, peering about curiously and occasionally chirping down at him. They're bored, but they know better than to stray far from the ship; going between to a ship is a very tricky business, since they tend to move across the water and landmarks can't be trusted. Better, far better, to fly straight across the water to get to a ship and go between only on the way back to land. They're not comfortable going too far and then having to fly back to the ship, and since it's a calm day with no excitement promised for the effort, they're not going to try.

Choosing a spot far from the long-lines - fishhooks might not do him much damage, but they do hurt - brown Roventh dives cleanly into the water, making barely more than ripples. Proud of himself for avoiding a splash, he surfaces long enough to look around, then dives again. N'ris, will the dolphineers be out around here? he asks his rider. I'd like that. It's not so much the fondness of water or dolphins that some dragons possess as the subtle humor that most dragons don't that inspires his question. Roventh likes dolphins for entirely different reasons than most of his kin. Dolphins provide opportunity to subtly taunt people, especially his beloved N'ris.

/Don't know,/ N'ris replies, the thought as abbreviated as if he'd spoken out loud. The brownrider never uses two words where one would do, and it's not just a tacturn nature; his very thinking, to his dragon's mind, is laconic.

The young woman walked quietly onto the sands next to the ocean, making sure not to pull attention to herself. Two bronzes and a brown flew after her, chirping quietly. Nazereth had already draped herself across the girls shoulder, her golden tail wrapped gently but firmly around the woman's neck. Traci, his bronze hide dark against the goldish sands, tried to perch every once in a while, as did his brown brother Torch, but Nazereth would scold them until they left. Only Serpens, a light bronze that was actually a bit goldish and that looked extermely dangerous with his whirling eyes and streching claws, was allowed to perch every once in a while, and that only because he was a baby, and not used to his wings just yet.

Synthis seemed unaware of the whole Battle for the Perch. Instead, she simply walked up to the water, and into a small cove. She sat down, right next to the water, so the liquid lapped at the knees of her crossed legs. She stood her elbows up on her knees, and laid her head in her hands.

She was thinking about Matt again. This time, however, it was not just about what she'd say when she met up with him again or what kinds of things to ask him about himself now that she could communicate. It was about him... and impression...

She knew he didn't like the idea. He'd tried with his sis, and she'd impressed a green, and from what Synthis could tell, it looked like he didn't want anyone to think he was trying to be like her. However, it was her lifelong dream to impress. It was the only way she'd belong. Her dragon could speak for her, and she'd never be alone.

The fits gave her a sharp reprimend, but she quickly soothed them. Besides, it was true. Even though they'd be there, they weren't someone you could have a conversation with, or sit with and find a way to amuse yourself on a rainy day. Sure, they were great and wonderful friends, but they'd never replace the real thing.

Which brught her back to Matt. If she impressed, and he didn't... she would be able to bear it. The mating flights. She didn't know about him, but the thought of being with someone else scared her. Especially someone she didn't know. Sure, it was all fine and dandy for some people, but she was NOT some people. She was Synthis; plain and simple.

However, if she didn't... what could she do? Live her life with only people like Matt and L'van and the goldrider to 'sign' to? She wasn't sure she could be a dolphineer; though tey'd know sign language, they do that underwater. To talk to her would be like extra homework to others; learn your sign-language. Plus, she didn't know the first thing about dolphins.

Oh, if only it weren't so hard...

What can I do? she thought desperatly, shifting into a laying position and causing all her flis to take off. Screeching, they re-positioned themselves. I can't make him impress. I know that if he doesn't want to, he doesn't have to. But, I don't want to be a rider all alone! I've never been scared more of anything in my life. And then there's dolphineering; I don't want to be a burden to the apprentices who're already working hard. I'd slow them down. But...

Tears were forming, but she kept her face dry. She wouldn't cry. She'd just have to think this out...

�Matt! Hey, Matt!�
L�van yelled to his best friend, and the dolphineer turned and waved, finishing the knot he was tying to fasten the boat to the dock before he straightened and clasped the bluerider�s hand.
�Lan! Good to see you! Why are you here?�
�I want to be! And I�m L�van now, Matty boy!�
The two began to mock fight, goaded on with loud applause by Lok and some of the other dolphins.
�You�re Lan!�
�I�m not! Admit it!�
�No! Someone has to stop your head from getting too big!�
�What about yours? Mister �I�m a Journeyman now� Matt!� L�van pinned his friend down. �Surrender?�
�Oh, Alright.�
The two sat up, and brushed large amounts of sand out of their hair. The rider groaned, stretching. �Just like old times, eh?�
Mat chuckled. �One day I�ll beat you. Remember that!�
�I will. But you won�t!� L�van held up his hands to forestall another attack. �I came to talk to you.�
�What about?�
L�van lay back, cradling his head with his hands, and closed his eyes with a sigh. This would be hard. �Impression.�
Matt frowned. �Lan, we�ve talked about this��
�Matt, please. Hear me out. Look, it�s about Synthis��
Matt turned red and looked at his friend. �What about Synthis?�
�I knew you�d get mad. Come on, Matt, you know she�ll make Impression!�
�What of it?�
�She�s gorgeous, intelligent�I know you�re infatuated, even if you don�t.�
Matt looked away.
�See. I�m right. Now, Matty boy, if you don�t at least try to Impress, she�ll only break your heart!�
�How so?�
�Mating flights. I know Arrth and I wouldn�t hesitate to join in one of hers��
Matt turned around and seized his friend by the collar. �If you even think of�of trying it on with her I�ll��
L�van stared. This was MATT he was talking to! Matt, whose good mood never changed! How could a girl affect him so much?
�Matt, calm down! What are you so het up about, eh?�
The other boy looked away resentfully, but his grip was still firm on L�van�s collar. �I knew there was something she wasn�t telling me! You�ve�you�ve been��
�I HAVE NOT!� L�van pulled away. �If you must know, Arrth wouldn�t let me!�
�What?� Matt frowned.
�He�s determined to settle down with Shalth, regardless of my feelings on the matter.�
�But you�you said��
�I was joking! I wanted to see how you�d react! As you can see, you were slightly overenthusiastic! Come on, Matt! You�d go off your head if she even thought about being with another man!�
Matt held his head in his hands. �What can I do?�
�I hate to say it, Matty boy, but all you have two options: Convince her not to Impress, or Impress yourself.�
�But�what if��
�You�ll never get anywhere if you say �what if�, Matt!�
�I know.� Matt sighed. �But still�Lok��
�You�ll have to have a nice long talk with her about it. She�s a practical dolphin � she already knows you�re mad about Synthis!�
�Alright.� Matt sighed. �I�ll think about it.�
L�van left the beach with a small smile on his face. At last � Matt was seeing some sense.
