Were there any black serving in Cleburne's Division, particularly in Granbury's Brigade (earlier called Nelson's, Deshler's, & Smith's Brigade). I have been writing a book (fiction) based on my Gr-Grandfather who was a private in Company H of the 10th Texas (originally under Col. Allison Nelson). They went on to become part of Cleburne's Division and fought gallantly in many engagements. My Gr-Grandfather was captured during the retreat from Missionary Ridge (Tunnel Hill) and sent to Rock Island Prison, where he enlisted in the Second U. S. Volunteer Infantry in October 1864 (one of six regiments recruited from various northern prisons), eventually serving on the Santa Fe Trail from Feb 1865 till he mustered out in Nov. 1865. The regiments that later took the place of these former Rebel POW's were the Buffalo Soldiers.

It is fascinating to me the evolution and connections between all people who struggled in the Civil War and afterwards. Thank you for this site.
