That added diode is the 'bullet protector' mod that was applied to the 5507 - great work finding that one.
The 5508 data looks to me like it's manchester coded (normal or differential?) with more bits than the line18 data for earlier units. It appears to have a bit period of 2.2uS and contains 24-25 bits including the start bit and I did not notice a large burst at the start - the reason I left the large burst detector out of my circuit. The reason my 'fuzzy' auto invert method works is possibly because the last bit is a parity bit or the LSB of a checksum and is mostly set if the invert bit is on and vice versa if not or maybe I just lucked out.
Can anyone add more here? (I'm 'croless' at the moment so progress will delayed somewhat)
It would be very helpful if someone with a fast digital cro could post a picture or two of the packet for us to play with.
